Genealogy Night Lock-In
on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at 6:00 pm
Have you ever been interested in doing genealogy research? This is your chance to get started or to work on the research you have already started.
Saturday, July 15th the Craighead County Jonesboro Public Library will host two events all about history! The history of our community and the public library and an event about your history! This year, the library is celebrating a Century of Stories. This year the staff of the library have held several events celebrating their 100th anniversary. Since first opening in January of 1917, the library has gone through a lot of changes and so has the community. Throughout the year, the library has hosted special events every quarter to learn more about the history of the community and the library. The third quarter, 1968-1992, will be presented on Saturday, July 15th at 2 p.m. in the Round Room.
The presentation will be delivered by Phyllis Burkett, former director of the Craighead County Jonesboro Public Library. Burkett will be joined by retired architect Dewaine Beisner who worked for Stuck Associates and Rusty Dancer, retired Assistant Director at CCJPL. This presentation will be an oral history of library events and services.
Also taking place on Saturday is the annual Genealogy Night Lock-In hosted by the library on the third Saturday of July each year. This event begins at 6 p.m. and ends at midnight! At this event, guest speaker Faye Futch will present The History of an African American Historic Commercial District - Jonesboro, AR 1910-1960. Futch is a Research Assistant/Historian for the University of Arkansas Archeological Survey at the Parkin Research Station. The presentation will take place at 7:00 p.m. in the library Round Room.
There will be experts at the event that will be ready to help those who need it! Different service points will be set up for everyone from beginners to those who need help getting over a research obstacle. Those who stay until midnight will receive a free t-shirt! The t-shirt that will be handed out this year is a 100th year special edition.
