1000 Books Before Kindergarten

The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program engages parents in a commitment to read 1000 books to their child before the child enters kindergarten. Reading aloud to your child is the single most important activity you can do to prepare your child to learn to read. Research by Mem Fox, literacy expert and children’s author, concludes that 1000 stories read aloud is a critical milestone.

How it works

1. Register

for the program by visiting the Children’s Library. Each child needs a library card to participate.

2. Read

and log your books in your child’s reading log folder.

3. Report

back to a children’s librarian with your My Reading Log folder every time you have completed 100 books to receive your next set of reading log pages. There may be surprises at some milestones.

4. Repeat

until you have finished 1000 books. Upon completion of 1000 books, your child will receive a certificate and be entered into our grand prize drawing.
